This is a great Karate school. The staff are excellent at what they do, very great with children and adults. My kids love it and so do I. I started taking the adult class about a month or so ago. I have lost weight and am getting in shape, and to top it all off I'm learning a lot and loving it:)

My grand daughter attended for the first time on Monday, and she fell in love with it. The kids have a lot of fun as well as learning important things for every day life. The best part for parents is you can watch your child as they are learning. I give the school an A+!

We started our 5 year old here in March and we have already seen a marked improvement in his self control and behavior, he is learning to control his body and be more aware of others. Our little guy loves his instructors and has a feeling of pride every time he learns a new move. I would recommend this dojo to anyone interested in getting their child started in martial arts.

We have been attending karate here for 5 months. My son loves it and is always excited for karate nights. He is learning discipline and how to help others. Tonight he cleaned the kitchen up all my hisself without even being asked. I highly recommend OKS! All the staff is friendly and willing to go the extra mile for the students.

It is awesome how they work, train and play with the kids. They teach and coach the kids to be upstanding, fine, respectful young people. They also teach them to have fun.

This Karate dojo is very beneficial to the youth as well as adults in that it does an effective job in teaching them the value of hard work. One major factor that sets this dojo apart from other dojos is the emphasis the instructors put on actually mastering the material and techniques for each level before advancing to the next level. Many dojos will advance students due to "time in rank" without properly ensuring that they are prepared for advancement. The sensei of this school truly pushes and encourages the students to be at their best and to achieve their goals. Adult students will effectively learn to utilize some of the ancient weapons of Japanese culture. Overall, this is.a great environment to train in martial arts.

Black Belt Magazine Article Submission

Here is an article I was asked to write by Black Belt Magazine. Maybe you’ll see it in an issue in the future! :o)

Our #1 Martial Arts Goal

By Michael Brewster

Martial Artists get asked all the time:

“Do you think you can beat them up (they point to biggest person in the room)?”

“Can you break that (points to a random tree) with a karate chop?”

And after we show a self-defense technique, the famous “But, what if they (inserts some strange random occurrence)..?”

But we are usually never asked the more important question: What is the #1 thing Martial Artists try to instill in their students?

I won’t keep you in suspense, the número uno trait we teach at our school is being POLITE. From the “Yes sirs” and “Yes ma’ams” to the bowing. From the Character Education lessons to the helping your sparring partner up when you knock them down. The taking your shoes off to the no talking when the Instructor is talking. The goal, as my Sensei said, and end result, is to be a polite person both in and out of class.

Now does that mean that if a student is a polite person, they will never have any issues or have to defend themselves? That punching someone in the face is not very polite, so they can’t ever do it? Of course not. There is a time and place for violence, and we teach them violence. But only as a last resort. Most fights are started verbally, by not controlling mouths, and being polite involves knowing when to shut up and hold their tongue. THAT is much tougher than learning to punch hard or kick high.

We need to change the perception of Martial Arts from the two extremes we think of:

1) Bare knuckle brawlers who are whacking each other with shinai while in a jigotai stance for

hours (the good ol days! :o)

and the opposite

2)   $3000 a month Super Ninja Club Members who can’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag      because they are covered in patches weighing them down!

To well-rounded individuals who can defend themselves and their loved ones if needed.

Times have changed since we started teaching Martial Arts. Equipment and automation has improved, we work on life skills and not just kicking, dojos are clean, nicer and classes are not just for “macho” dudes anymore. The end product should be the same though. Polite individuals who can handle all that life throws at them!
